Lent Meditation: Day 29 - March 18, 2026

📖 Scripture Verse

The Pharisees began to argue with [Jesus], asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.” — Mark 8:11-12

🕯️Meditation

God does not make our faith compulsory by overwhelming us with flashy, heavenly skywriting.  In Mark’s gospel, Jesus will often work miraculous healings, multiplication of loaves, calming of storms, and the like—but these wonders are given not in response to a demand that he perform to prove himself, but as manifestations of God’s glory that may elicit faith and gratitude, but sometimes do not.  In Jesus’ own hometown of Nazareth, his healings result in him being “amazed at their unbelief.” (Mark 6:6).

In our own life we may be tempted to demand that God prove himself to us.  We may wish we could direct God like we may direct our TV with a remote control.  We may wish we could have any doubt or uncertainty removed by an unmistakeable display of power.  If we demand that God perform for us, we are talking to a Genie, not God.  If we demand that God obey us, we may push ourselves farther and farther from being able to see and perceive him.  Even if God were to skywrite for us, would we respond with faith?  Would that produce trust, or only an appetite for more signs?

And yet, we when place our trust and faith in God, signs of his presence begin to abound.  We can hear his Spirit in our hearts, feel it move in our worship.  We find ourselves flooded with his presence when we behold the grandeur of creation.  We see God and God at work in each other.  These signs come as gifts of grace, not forced by our demands.

🙏 Prayer

Loving God, help me to have the faith and trust you. Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us.* Amen.

*This phrase comes from Eucharistic Prayer C, BCP p. 372.
